Rules

Rules and Regulations pertaining to the Light Continuous (Light Con.) University Kickboxing Championships at the
University of Kent at Canterbury.

Please note that as this is a student event and anyone that has competed at a National level in any Martial Art should not enter.  Your are advised to enter Ringmasters instead.

  1. Registration:
    • All competitors must sign & weigh in upon arrival to the event.
    • All competitors must sign and hand in a full RCUK disclaimer during registration.
    • All competitors must pay the registration fee that will:
      • Licence them for one day under the RCUK competition policy.
      • Entitle them to any discounts/benefits associated with the tournament.
    • All coaching staff must sign and hand in the coaching disclaimer assigned by RCUK.
    • All competitors must show a valid student card.
  2. Rough weight divisions for Light Con. contact events (may change depending on number of entrants):
    • Men
      • - 58kg Feather Weight
      • - 64kg Light Weight
      • - 70kg Welter Weight
      • - 76kg Middle Weight
      • - 81kg Light Heavy Weight
      • - 89kg Cruiser Weight
      • 90 +kg Heavy Weight
    • Women
      • - 54kg Feather Weight
      • - 58kg Light Weight
      • - 62kg Welter Weight
      • - 66kg Middle Weight
      • - 72kg Light Heavy Weight
      • - 78kg Cruiser Weight
      • 78kg + Heavy Weight
    • RCUK reserves the right change the weight categories at any time in order to ensure that each division has an equal amount of competitors. These changes will be slight and always ensure that no one should be disadvantaged.
    • All competitors must weigh in immediately upon arrival to the event. Final weigh in time will be at exactly 10:00 am. It is unlikely that competitors will be accepted for competition after this time.
  3. Bouts:
    • Each round will last exactly 90 seconds.
    • All fights will consist of 2 rounds. In the event of a draw, the fight will go to a 3rd or 4th round until a winner can be decided.
    • Fights are of a continuous nature and any fighter who chooses to stop during a bout will be penalized through the RCUK warning system.
    • Any fighter who chooses to exit the ring/mat during a bout will be penalized through the RCUK warning system.
    • In the event a fighter is forced off a mat, the referee will stop the bout and allow both fighters to re-start in the centre of the mat. (Note that being forced off a mat illustrates poor ring control and will go against that fighter on the score cards).
  4. Equipment:
    • All competitors must wear Kickboxing trousers that cover the whole leg from ankle to the waist.
    • All competitors must wear a top/vest during each bout.
    • All competitors must wear a mouth guard during each bout.
    • All competitors must wear 12oz boxing gloves in each bout with.
    • All competitors must wear shin guards (Thin foam shin guards are not acceptable).
    • All competitors must wear foot pads that cover the whole foot, (top & heal).
    • All male competitors must wear a groin guard/box.
    • It is advised that all female competitors should wear chest protectors.
    • All competitors must wear appropriate head guards.
  5. Illegal strikes:
    • The following moves are NOT allowed in any RCUK Light Con. University event in attempt to ensure that any possibility of serious injury is reduced.
      • Elbow strikes.
      • Knee strikes.
      • Spinning and normal back fist.
      • Spinning hook kicks to the head.
      • Kicks below the waist.
      • Any strike to the groin.
      • Any strike to the back of the head and body.
      • Clinch work.
      • Ground work of any nature.
      • Throws & drop sweeps.
      • Strikes aimed at the eyes/neck.
      • Biting and head butting.
      • Any heavy strike.
      • Front Snap/Push kick to the face.
      • Catching & holding of the foot or legs.
      • Axe/Crescent kicks.
      • Any force deemed excessive.
    • Hook kicks are allowed but MUST be used with extreme control. The flat of the foot must make contact and not the heal.
    • Strikes to the head should be controlled and show no intentional power.
    • Any competitor using heavy strikes to the head will be subject to the RCUK warning system.
    • Standing Foot- to-Foot Sweeps only are allowed.  Contact must be made below the bottom 1/3 of the calf and the sweep must be executed cleanly using the appropriate technique.
  6. Ring Combat Warning System:
    • This system will be enforced in all RCUK Light Con. events. Any competitor that does not agree with this system should not compete.
    • The officials decision is final.  It can and will not be overturned.
    • All competitors are expected to compete in accordance with the rules outlined in this document.
    • Failure to comply with the rules set out in this document will result in the following disciplinary action:
      • 1st verbal warning.
      • 2nd verbal warning.
      • Deduction of 1 point.
      • Disqualification of competitor from the event.
    • The warning system is cumulative in each fight.  For example: if you receive 2 verbal warnings in round 1, you will loose a point in round 2 if your behaviour continues.
    • All RCUK officials are fully trained and understand fully what behaviour is acceptable. A no tolerance approach will be adopted in all bouts with no exceptions.
    • Corner staff can also receive warnings for un-sports man like behaviour. This will applied in the following way:
      • Verbal warning.
      • Exclusion from ANY further corner work for the rest of the event.
      • Extreme cases will result in the individual being banned from all RCUK University championships in the future.
    • The referee will check the competitors fighting equipment. If the referee is unsatisfied that the competitor meets the specified requirements they will allow the competitor 3 minutes to rectify the problem. Failure to meet this requirement will result in the competitor being disqualified from the event.
    • The referee has the right to disqualify any competitor at any time for serious breach of any rule.
  7. Scoring System:
    • The RCUK University Kickboxing Championships is a Light Con. event.
    • Officials of each bout will be looking for the following factors when determining a winner:
      • Cleanly landed strikes.
      • Strong work rate.
      • Effective counter striking.
      • Effective offensive striking.
      • Minimum kick count of 6 kicks per round.
      • Effective ring control.
      • Effective defensive work.
      • Overall composure and bout control.
    • Officials will not favour the following factors:
      • Wild uncontrolled strikes.
      • Strikes hitting the opponents guard.
      • Un-sports man like behaviour.
      • Poor ring control.
      • Poor composure.
      • Non-effective guard.
      • Excessive force.
    • Competitors will only be given a standing 8 count to compose themselves.
    • Each round will be scored on a boxing 10, 9 scoring system.
  8. General information:
    • Any form of jewellery must be removed.
    • All body piercing must be removed.
    • Toe nails must be cut with no sharp edges.
    • Only coaches can speak with officials about the behaviour of other competitors that may appear to not comply with the rules.
    • Glasses are forbidden. Contacts can be worn but at the competitors own risk. In the event a contact is knocked out, the competitor can request the bout be stopped until the contact is found. This is at the referees’ discretion.
    • In the event a competitor is disqualified for any of the above reasons a refund will NOT be issued. Refunds will only be issued in the event of the tournament stopping and the competitor does not have the opportunity to compete.
